  • Praying my "IOU'S"

I have to admit, I don't finish books that often. I start a lot of them, but don't finish many. And although I am easily moved and convicted by the things I read, rarely do I practice them...or even remember them to be quite honest.

But there is something I read in one of Piper's books called "When I Don't Desire God: How to Fight for Joy" that I've actually found extremely  helpful and something I practice on a normal basis. (On a side note, we read this book in CFG our sophomore or junior year in college....shoutout to Annie! )

This morning, I was reminded of it once again as I found myself not desiring God. I was about to dive into my studies as I normally do using the "I'm too busy because of med school" excuse, rather than spend a few quiet moments with Him in the word and prayer. But gladly the Spirit won. So, I wanted to share it with you all. May it help and bless you as it has for me.

Before having a devotional, this is what I pray...

    I - Incline my heart.

"The first thing my soul needs is an inclination toward God and His Word. I must want to know God and read His word and draw near to him...Very simply, we ask God to take our hearts, which are more inclined to breakfast and the newspaper, and change that inclination. We are asking God to create desires that are not there."

Incline my heart to your testimonies, and  not to selfish gain!   -Psalm 119:18

O- Open the eyes of my heart.

"I need to have the eyes of my heart opened so that when my inclination leads me to the Word, I see what is really there, and not just my own ideas."

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.  -Psalm 119:18
Open the eyes of my heart, O Lord, to see what it says about you as wonderful.

    U- Unite my heart.

"My heart is badly fragmented. Parts of it are inclined, and part of it are not...What I long for is a united heart where all the parts say a joyful YES! to what God reveals in His word.

Unite my heart to fear your name. -Psalm 86:11
His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.  -Isaiah 11:3

    S- Satisfy me.

"What I really want from all this engagement with the Word of God and the work of his Spirit in answer to my prayer is for my heart to be satisfied with God and not with the world."

Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. -Psalm 90:14

To all the people out there who are struggling to find joy in the Lord, or not finding joy in life period....let's take a moment to go back to the source of joy. Let's pray our IOU'S, and wait in expectation as God opens the flood gates of joy from His Word and Spirit into our lives!

  • Today, I am a happy Laker fan

Best Christmas gifts this year (in no particular order, except #1 is really #1)

    1. Lakers victory over the smelly Celts.

    2. Wicked tickets

    3. A scarf made by a student

    4. A book titled "The Worst-case Scenario Survival Handbook"

    5. Umm..

OK it's really late and my brain isn't functioning very well, so I want to stop listing things. The point of this post was to just gloat about the Lakers.

Greatest Christmas gift EVER: seeing a sad Paul Pierce.

    Thank you Kobe Bryant!!!!!! :) :) :)

  • Pure fluff.

If I had a son, I would buy him this for Christmas.

    Zoom Lebron Soldier.

Call me a bandwagon'er all you want, but I am becoming more of a Lebron James fan. Perhaps it's just out sheer terror that my beloved #24 will be donning another team's jersey very soon. Of course I'll always be a Kobe fan (holla!), but I gotta admit, Lebron is pretty sick. Anyway, did you know that at the humble age of 18, he signed a $90 million, 7-year endorsement deal with Nike? Bejeebus. Even Air Jordan himself signed for "only" $2.5 million on his first Nike contract. My goodness, what in the world is a 23 year old gonna do with $90 million? Not to mention the kabillion dollars he makes playing for the Cavs. And I'm sure he makes like, $50000 every time those awesome ESPN commercials air. Haha! He could probably single-handedly feed all the hungry children in America. Mama Gloria sure must be proud...

OK so I seriously need to get a life and stop wasting precious time (refer to "currently reading" below).

  • God, I pray Thee, light these idle sticks of my life,

and may I burn for Thee.

Consume my life, my God, for it is Thine.

I seek not a long life, but a full one, like you, Lord Jesus.

  • Best quotes of the week

    Is this really true, men?

"After coming home from a long day's work, you wanna come home to a hot meal, not a hot wife."
     -Wonny

This was during our discussion about how the best way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Which btw if true, I am so screwed. Why can't it be through his brain??? Geez. The brain is such a wonderful organ. It's what makes us so special, giving us the ability to rhyme and reason. Come on, even earthworms have stomachs. Well, a crop and gizzard to be exact. Sorry, I digress. Guys are such simple creatures. I'm hungry --> I love you. Ha! Well fine, I'll accept that the way to his heart can't be through his brain because we all know that the only true way to any man's heart is through his pericardium. Heheheheehehehe!!!!! If you understood that without googling it (and found it funny), I wanna be your best friend.

    ----

At Annie's bridal shower yesterday, we played a game called "purse scavenger hunt." We got separated into teams and eagerly put our purses together to check off things on the prepared list. Every item had a different point value, depending on the randomness of it. One of the things on the list was "a rock," with a whopping point value of 10.

    Jamie: I have a rock!
    Gina: That's not a rock.
Jamie: (so confidently) Yes it is. It's a rock I got from Taiwan.
Gina: (baffled) No, Jamie. That's a bean!!
Jamie: (so genuinely) No! It's a rock. But if you plant it in the ground, it grows!

Wow, I was a Bio major, and they never taught us that rocks germinate. Oh how I love this girl. A never-ending source of joy in my life.

  • Say it ain't so.

Bill Simmons wrote an article today regarding Kobe's comment about wanting to be traded from the Lakers. He made a list of the 7 most logical trade deals. Here is numero uno.

Deal No. 1: Phoenixtrades Shawn Marion, Leandro Barbosa, Marcus Banks and the rights toAtlanta's 2008 1st-rounder to the Lakers for Kobe and Radmanovic.

Now we're talking! Some of my favorite things about this trade include …

(A)The Lakers ending up with a nucleus of Marion, Odom, Barbosa and Bynum, along with Farmar, Walton, Turiaf and the No. 19 pick, as well as theinevitable Kwame Brown trade to a moronic team that convinces itselfthat Kwame's career could be salvaged. That's a pretty good foundation.

    (B) Phoenix trotting out a starting lineup of Nash, Kobe, Raja Bell, Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw. Good golly. Sweet Jesus.

(C)Radmanovic realizing his manifest destiny of playing in Phoenix. It wasmeant to be from the moment Mike D'Antoni and Nash teamed up threeyears ago.

    (D) Kobe and Raja as teammates. High comedy. The most improbable pairing since Rodman and Pippen 12 years ago.

(E)The most selfish player in the league (Kobe) playing with the mostunselfish player in the league (Nash). What a fascinating sociologicalexperiment. If Nash can turn Kobe into a team player, I'm voting himfor our 2008 President even though he's Canadian.

Twopotential problems: First, it's unlikely that the Lakers would be dumbenough to trade Kobe within their own division, although with Kupchakinvolved, anything's possible. And second, assuming that Nash has a sayin front office decisions at this point, would he really want togreen-light a scenario that has him managing two enormous egos inStoudemire and Kobe?

Well, lemme throw this at you: What if the Suns then swapped Stoudemire to Minnesota for KG, as I proposed in a May 14th column? That would give them the following crunch-time lineup: Nash, Kobe, Bell, Diaw and KG. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2008 World Champions! Just send them the trophy right now.

Sothat's my vote: Black Mamba, you're going to Phoenix to play with KGand Nash. And if it happens, I can guarantee that the 2008 playoffswill be more entertaining than the 2007 playoffs.

(Which isn't saying much, but still.)

If this happens, I will seriously light myself on fire. OMG. Someone please call 911 and tell them a small asian girl at Biola Library is about to have an aneurysm.

  • A quien tengo yo en los cielos, sino a ti?
Y fuera de ti, nada deseo en la tierra.
Mi carne y mi corazon pueden desfallecer,
pero Dios es la fortaleza de mi corazon y mi porcion para siempre.

    New beginnings...
